SRMD Yoga Teacher, Dr. Mansi teaches us quick tips to improve our day to day lifestyle! Sitting cross-legged is an important part of yoga practice and is commonly used for breathing and meditation practices. It requires flexibility in the hips, thighs, joints and even the back.
But remember to be patient 😊
Developing the flexibility to sit easily is a gradual process.
If you are still having difficulty maintaining an erect spine while sitting cross-legged, you can always begin by sitting on the edge of a cushion, bolster or rolled blanket.
For additional support, place rolled blankets or bolsters under your knees. You may find that with the knees supported, the thighs relax.
These standing poses, Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I Pose), Parsvottanasana (Pyramid Pose) and sitting pose Badhakonasana (Butterfly Pose), help open the hips and back of the legs. The longer you stay the more you can increase in flexibility. But make sure that in all of these poses, allow yourself to relax into the stretch and enjoy :)
