We've learned in the last lesson that a mean, or average, is a measure of center. A measure of center is a single number used to describe a set of numeric data. Another measure of center is the median. The median represents the middle value of a data set, when the list of numbers are in order. To find a median, we first make sure the numbers are in order from least to greatest, or greatest to least. When the data set contains an odd amount of numbers, we can easily choose a middle number. When the data set contains an even amount of numbers, we need to find the average, or mean, of the two numbers in the center. We can order the data from least to greatest, or greatest to least, without affecting the median value. If we replace data values to either side of the center, it will not affect the median. The median divides the data values in two at the center, just as the median of a road divides the road down the center.
