The Contribution of Scotland’s South Asians, Colourful Heritage

The story of South Asian migration to Glasgow is unique. South Asians are a small community in Scotland yet they have made an immense and ever-diversifying impact on the country, producing everything from Councillors, MSPs to MPs, major businesses to iconic restaurants and unique cuisines. Scotland produced the first Muslim Councillor in UK (Bashir Maan, 1970), the first Muslim MP in UK (Mohammed Sarwar, 1997) and invented the nations favourite curry, the Chicken Tikka Masala!

With over 120 oral video histories in its online archive, Colourful Heritage has a first-hand insight into the way this community has made an indelible mark on this corner of Britain.

We have also been exploring the role of the British Indian Army (BIA) in both World Wars in particular ‘Force K6’ soldiers – an Indian Muslim regiment from Punjab that escaped from Dunkirk during World War 2. Scotland houses the largest gravesite of these soldiers who are buried in the heart of the Scottish Highlands at Kingussie Cemetery.

This online event will be a fantastic opportunity to share our insight with the rest of the country and celebrate the diversity and the contribution of the Scottish South Asian heritage in Britain as well as highlight the role of the British Indian Army, particularly the ‘Force K6’ regiment.
