La Palma volcano triggers further evacuations
Hundreds more people had to leave their homes on the Spanish island of La Palma. Lava flows continue to be a threat in the area. Volcanic activity at La Palma in the Canary Islands has prompted another round of evacuations, local media reported today. According to Pevolca, the committee that manages the emergency response, 500 people had to leave their homes overnight as molten lava moved deeper into the coastal city of Tazacorte. Cumbre Vieja started erupting more than a month ago. About 7,500 people have had to leave their homes since the start of the eruption. The lava flows that continued the path of destruction have completely buried homes and businesses, destroying the livelihoods and property of many residents. The mayor of Tazacorte, Juan Miguel Rodriguez, told local broadcaster RTVE that some were starting to lose hope. "There is already a certain level of hopelessness and desperation, waiting for the volcano to subside," Rodriguez said.
