Permit to Work is important and imperative part of health and safety management system. The main areas where permit to work is compulsory to be applied are:

The very first step is "Issuance of Permit". The permit should be issued appropriately. Personals who want to use the permit needs to give sufficient time for HSE Head or relevant HSE Executive of the organization who is nominated for permit issuance to fill the permit to work form with comfort. Details such as "employees competency, employees experience, PPEs bringing along with their conditions, temporary closing of electrical connections, temporary closing off mechanical connections, the description of the permit job to be clearly written, permit time period, fire extinguishers details to be present near permit to work area, first aid kit details to be present, fire safety officer details to be present, light with lux level there, walkie-talkie to have communication channel, job rotation and many more are mentioned in the permit.
After the permit gets issued it's receipts are most of the time have three copies. One copy remains with the issuer (HSE Head), one copy goes with the permit to work usage personals with them and one copy gets displayed in the central location of the said organization most of the time on notice boards.
When the work gets completed the permit to work usage employees comes to the HSE Head for showing and telling that permit to work gets cleared appropriately. Meanwhile, if any LOTO tags have been used they should be tagged down from the said places so that relevant processes and functions gets operational again.
The HSE Head after verification cancel the permit which has been duly completed within the said course of time however there comes many occasions when permit to work activity does not completed in the said frame of mind. In that cases, an extension is given by the HSE Head for the said permit. During that extended time the permit to work team completes the remaining task. After the said is done the permit to work team returns to HSE Head and gives the details. The HSE Head cancels the permit and the work of permit thus completed.
There are few limitations of permit to work such as "Permit issuance" for a bakery may takes few minutes however "Permit Issuance" of Oil-Rig may takes several minutes. Further, the permit to work should be issued by a competent personal who has relevant competency and experience in the said field.
