Researchers have identified two enzymes that play a role in increasing people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk of developing severe Covid-19.
An inflammatory lung condition, COPD causes airway blockage and makes it difficult to breathe. It affects around 400 million people globally.
Researchers from the Centenary Institute and the University of Technology Sydney infected differentiated airway cells from COPD patients and healthy people with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.
The researchers found that the COPD airway cells had 24-fold greater infection with SARS-CoV-2 than the healthy cells.
