Open Banking: Do Consumers Need to Understand It?

Open Banking: Do Consumers Need to Understand It?

During our OBE campfire in July 2021, Gavin Littlejohn and Brendan Jones had a debate around whether consumers need to know how Open Banking works. Gavin compares Open Banking technology to that of other technology that consumers use on a daily basis.

Gavin states that 'people buy a fridge because they want cold food' and that 'they've got no interest in putting their hand their plug'. Brendan somewhat agrees, but he think that where the industry has failed is in educating consumers about Open Banking. Brendan believes that we need to address this, as the word 'open' presents different connotations to a consumer.
