Just Why Are Electric Car Batteries So Hard To Produce (And Diagnose)?

Just Why Are Electric Car Batteries So Hard To Produce (And Diagnose)?

With new battery cell chemistries and 'holy grail' announcements made seemingly every week, it feels like we're riding on a wave of battery cell improvements coming "soon".

At the same time, existing EV batteries, if they go wrong, seemingly take forever to fix.

So how can both things be true? We're here to explain why it's both hard to design (and commercialize) new batteries, as well as why it's hard to diagnose faults with existing ones.

00:00 - Introduction
00:58 - EV batteries and the holy grail of cell design
02:21 - Wonder chemistries are touted almost every day - but they won’t all make it to market
04:33 - Laboratory success ≠ commercial success
09:28 - Lots and lots of testing
11:12 - Why it takes so long to discover faults
13:06 - Bolt, Kona EV fire faults
15:14 - Knowing doesn’t make it easier
18:21 - Thanks, and goodbye!
